Why Can I Not Forget Thee?

Why can I not forget thee?
Though the morning passes by,
Though birds are singing in the trees
And soaring through the sky?

Though dawn has turned to day
And time is ticking towards its goal,
It seems that life is only
On my spirit taking toll.

The whole wide world seems normal
Yet my woes loom up inside,
I cannot, no! forget thee
For the pain I could not bide.

Much better that I suffer
With a dear thorn in my breast
Than surrender it and never
Know if I could pass the test!

No, dearest, so I bury
That sad scruple of my heart,
Forgiving those around me
That they live a world apart.

And thou, now ever with me,
Shalt remain so till I die
Though the dawn has turned to daytime
And the morning passes by.

I was thinking it may be better in the last verse:

"Though dawn has turned to daytime
And the morning passes by."

Why do you think? Did you stumble up on the last verse? Or any of it?
