Friends

A poem concerning the battle of Life...

A bitter cup of woe my lot,
This chalice I must drink;
Take courage, o my soul, be strong! –
I cannot help but shrink.

To stand a sorrow in the face –
And welcome it the same! –
Is brav'ry! Such as only those
Of sterner stuff can claim.

I cringe, and turn to hide my face
From sorrow's daunting sight,
And there I see you, dearest friend!
Beside me in the fight.

You smile! What courage fills my heart;
What hope that wisdom lends!
How happy he so blessed to face
This war alongside friends.

Very nice contrast b/w. the first and the second half! It is so hopeful (at the end ;)) and it's a very original view of friends without whom the fights would be unbearable. Keep writing such wise poems!

I, too, like the way it looks up at the end, with the realization that there is an alliance of friendship to depend on.
